The Dressing Gown

On Christmas of 2023, I received a gift from my cousin. It was a dressing robe. Growing up in the Philippines, robes were not common in our daily lives. However, my cousin was fascinated by them at the time and wanted to share the discovery with me. And oh my goodness when I used it, I LOVE IT!

My robe has a classic design and it is made from a lightweight material that makes it comfortable to wear here in the tropics. Initially, I used it as a dressing gown but soon discovered it can be used for more. Now, I wear it when receiving mail to look more presentable, as a light jacket in my home office, and sometimes as loungewear. I appreciate how simple yet functional it is! As someone who did not grow up using dressing gowns, I was blown away by how much I enjoy wearing it.

I was inspired. It led me to design robe patterns to sew in real life. I used the same robe patterns for this project, but for drama, I blew up the proportions and sprinkled a little of the oversized look. I also used outerwear materials such as denim and leather to see if I could take the simplicity and functionality of the robe outside of my home and wear it as a jacket or a flowy topper. I made twelve looks and I enjoyed creating each one of them. 🙂
